They finished with 10 men and without a recognised goalkeeper as Rangers centre-forward Stuart Rose ran riot with four goals, two in either half.
Town made the worst possible start by conceding two goals in the first nine minutes. Rose headed in a cross by Olly Cann after just three minutes and then stepped up to convert a penalty six minutes later after James Coatsworth was adjudged to have committed a deliberate hand-ball in the box.
With Coatsworth sent off, it was always going to be tough to play 80 minutes with 10 men. Nevertheless, the home side carved out chances to get back into the contest.
Harry Croft hit the bar and shot narrowly wide. And Jack Stapley had a shot well saved by ‘keeper Ollie Swan. Rangers also threatened again when Chay Liddle hit the bar from a free-kick.
Northallerton’s best chance came when they were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute after Jack Stapley was brought down by Jacob Thompson in the area. Bradley Hughes, who scored his first goal for Town in the midweek North Riding Senior Cup semi-final with Yarm & Eaglescliffe, took the kick, which was well saved by Swan.
Town’s bad luck continued when ‘keeper Jacob Crowle picked up an injury and was unable to appear for the second half, defender Harvey Rudd taking the gloves.
Rose helped himself to a further two goals in the 59th and 66th minutes amid muted celebrations.
