With five new signings making their debuts amid a huge squad turnover, this victory vindicates the sweeping changes introduced by Myers and his assistant Dion Raitt in their whirlwind start to life in the Town dugout.
The win at West Allotment’s temporary home of Morpeth’s Craik Park lifts Ally three places in Ebac Northern League Division One and raises hopes they can erase their relegation fears. More signings are planned to create extra competition for places and the new management team are determined to lift fitness and performance levels.
Town signalled their intent from the start with a high-energy, possession-based game that delighted their travelling fans. But they were forced to overcome the setback of going a goal down against the run of play after 20 minutes.
The visitors conceded possession cheaply on the edge of their box and Tom McIntyre took advantage, neatly converting past ‘keeper Jacob Crowle. They clinched the equaliser they deserved, however, six minutes before the break.
Jack Stapley floated a lovely cross from the right that wing-back Jake Dobinson headed in unchallenged at the far post for a debut goal.
Within seconds of the restart, Northallerton went ahead. Matty Kirokiro, a half-time substitute for injured skipper James Coatsworth, picked out Jack Spears in the box and the youngster produced a neat finish past Celtic ‘keeper Sean Newmark.
It was no less than Town deserved as they continued to dominate. Spears was narrowly off target with a couple more efforts as the new boys gelled well in a hard-working performance.
Substitute Alistair Banks put the icing on the cake with Northallerton’s third goal shortly before the final whistle. Again, Kirokirio was the creator, intelligently picking out his fellow substitute in the box for a straightforward finish.
It gives Banks daylight again in the race for the Town golden boot, his eighth goal of the season lifting him one ahead of Harry Croft.
“We had to win today and the lads were brilliant,” said a delighted Myers. “New and old players gelled together well.
“But we know there are tough challenges ahead to get those three or four wins that will guarantee our safety.”
