Match Report | Consett (A)

Northallerton travelled to former Northern League side Consett for their next pre-season friendly. Sunny Consett (I promise I'm not lying) played host with Northallerton, the victors the last time they visited the Belle Vue Stadium.

First-Half

In what was a hot day, Town started fairly brightly in the opening exchanges and had the game's first real opportunity of note.

A Northallerton corner was cleared away only as far as Charlie Graham, who then played in Jack Stapley. Stapley's subsequent cross found Matty Crust in the area however he couldn't convert from 10 yards out due to the excellent goalkeeping of Mark Foden.

The next chance then swung for the hosts. Tom Dawson stood strong to deny Consett before Nathan Stephenson made a crucial challenge to prevent the opportunity for a follow-up effort.

The momentum did shift and it wasn't much longer before the hosts capitalised. In what was the first real attack for the hosts, a ball into the box caused a scramble which eventually fell for Daniel Craggs whose turn and finished left Dawson unable to keep the ball out, and Consett duly took the lead.

The hosts continued to dominate possession and were eventually rewarded with another goal.

Karl Byrne, cut in from the right-hand side and beat two Town men before unleashing an unstoppable effort across the box and into the top left-hand corner. It has to be said, it was a wonderful strike.

Consett continued to control proceedings as the half came to a close, flexing their newly promoted muscles and leaving Town with scraps to work with.

Town did manage to muster another decent effort, the lively Reece McCann found himself some space and he managed to play in Nathan Stephenson who picked out the top corner, but the excellent Mark Foden made another fantastic stop to preserve his clean sheet.

Half-Time - Consett AFC 2 - 0 Northallerton Town

Second-Half

It didn't take long for Consett to have their next opportunity to add to their tally. Jake Orrell going close but he could only fire his effort wide.

Town then kicked into gear and had a chance of their own. McCann again caused issues and played through Stephenson - the resulting effort once more couldn't be converted and was sent wide of the post.

A raft of changes from both sides around the hour mark disrupted the flow of the game and it took a short while for the balance of play to be restored.

Replacement John Howard was next to test the Consett keeper, seeing a 25-yard effort well saved by replacement GK, Ross Coombe.

A couple of chances, involving Consett's Darren Holden soon followed however, the left winger wasn't having much luck with his teammates being unable to convert when played in on goal.

Stephenson went close once more in the last 5 minutes or so, with Ross Coombe saving his effort once more.

Town were fighting hard to find a way back into the game, but Consett held on. On another day Town surely would have found themselves a few goals to the good.
